The longer we spend here, the more we love this corner of Lanzarote. This is our personal guide to places worth getting to know: quiet villages, favourite tables, volcanic walks and sunsets we return to. You will find a few well-known sights too — Lanzarote does those differently — but this is not a list of resort bars in Puerto del Carmen. It is the island as we enjoy it.

Montaña Bermeja · La Santa
For us, this is the most beautiful sunset spot: a volcanic crater right above the ocean. We love the walk up and the sea views from the top.

La Nasa
A tiny restaurant right above the sea in Arrieta, and our favourite for seafood. If razor clams are in season, order them — I love them. This is our perfect stop on the way to Jameos del Agua.

La Graciosa by bike
Lanzarote’s neighbouring island is reached by boat, without your hire car. Our favourite way to explore is by bicycle, hired near the harbour. The sandy tracks in the north are the most entertaining part — expect some pushing as well as pedalling through a wonderfully empty landscape.

Casa Morelino
Our friends’ Italian restaurant here in Tiagua is a lovely choice for an evening close to home. The kitchen is happy to experiment. Ask what they recommend from the day’s specials — that is what we do.

Sherezada Morales Gallery
A local artist’s gallery in a beautiful old house in the centre of Teguise. We love combining it with the Sunday market and a look around her studio — a lovely glimpse into the island’s creative life.

Palmera shop
Little works of art, slow fashion and plenty to discover in one of Teguise’s traditional houses. Wander through the rooms and courtyard and look for the aljibe, the old water cistern. The building is as much part of the pleasure as the shop.

Festival de Música Visual
My cultural favourite — I once flew from Prague just for a concert. The programme brings together concerts, films and talks in intimate settings. Hearing Mario Batkovic in Cueva de los Verdes, with only about fifty people around us, was unforgettable. The lava cave’s acoustics made it extraordinary.

Lag-O-Mar
One of my favourite pieces of architecture: a house that becomes a labyrinth of rooms shaped around the rock, with a pool at its heart. I keep imagining what it would be like to live here. Then there is the famous story that Omar Sharif lost it at cards on his very first night — part of the place’s legend.

Las Grietas
A close-up look at what wind and water can do to volcanic rock: narrow passages and beautifully shaped walls. It has become popular, so we prefer early morning or later in the afternoon.

Casa Museo del Campesino
Traditional rural architecture with a Manrique surprise inside. Beyond the familiar white walls are unexpected spaces and a passage through volcanic rock — that contrast is what I love about it. It reminds me of his own house: modest on the outside, full of discoveries within. Admission is free.

Famara surf
Our favourite surf beach, about ten minutes by car from the villa. We love Calima Surf for its friendly instructors. Do not try it alone if you are inexperienced: strong currents can make even shallow-looking water dangerous. Take a lesson suited to your level.

Famara beach
Stay until sunset. When the light turns red over the Atlantic and the long beach glows, this is one of the most beautiful places we know.

Munsoo
One of our latest discoveries: slow cooking, with every dish given real care. We keep coming back for the burgers and the wonderfully soft Canarian cheesecake, tarta de queso. Come hungry.

Teguise
For us, the most beautiful town on the island. On weekdays it is wonderfully sleepy, with small craft shops, quiet lanes and half-empty restaurants — just how we like it. On Plaza Maciot de Bethencourt, I keep looking out for the friendly black dog I have met here for years. Sunday brings a completely different mood.

La Geria
Another Lanzarote original: vines growing in hollows in the black volcanic soil, sheltered by low stone walls. This is Malvasía country, a wine we love. Follow the road between Uga and Mozaga and you’ll pass bodegas and vineyards all along the way.

César Manrique Foundation
My favourite Manrique building. Upstairs, it looks like an ordinary Canarian house; beneath it is a maze of volcanic spaces with living rooms, party rooms and a pool. The period photographs make it clear how much he enjoyed life — the hammock picture always makes me smile.

Volcán de Los Cuervos
An easy-going walk into a volcanic crater, especially wonderful if you have only seen volcanoes in photographs. We have chased eruptions in Iceland, but the stillness inside this crater still takes our breath away. Pause for a moment and listen to the extraordinary acoustics.

El Grifo
A classic among Lanzarote’s wineries and one we return to, even though we love discovering younger producers too. Choose a short tour with a tasting. Aniversario and Ancestral are among our favourites; ask which wines are available when you visit.

Playa Quemada
Our choice when we want a quieter beach, with dark sand and room to ourselves. Some days it feels almost deserted — just us, the volcanic landscape and the ocean.

From the road, you would hardly guess what is tucked into the volcanic landscape: a winery and a restaurant set deep into the rock. We love coming for lunch. Sundays can be very busy, so reserve ahead.

A welcoming sandy beach in Costa Teguise, with easy access and restaurants nearby. This is where the best sandcastles get built! We love it for a family beach day, with plenty of fun for children, especially outside the busiest times.

Submarine Safaris
On my first visit, I somehow expected a glass-bottomed boat — despite the name. When we started to submerge, I was suddenly less certain! Then came the view through the porthole: little fish around a wreck on the seabed. A memorable outing for children.

Caletón Blanco
Among the lava of the northern coast, this little stretch of brilliant white sand and natural pools feels like a discovery. It is a lovely contrast to the island’s darker beaches. Water shoes come in handy here.

Rancho Texas
An animal park and water park together sounds rather loud, but we find the combination surprisingly well done. The dolphins are our favourite. Leave time for the cave exhibition about how Lanzarote was formed before the main show, and book directly online.

Aquarium Lanzarote
Fun for children, though as adults we feel it has seen better days. The underwater tunnel is still a highlight: you walk beneath the water while a small shark passes overhead.

La Lapa
Arrecife is not usually my favourite stop, which made finding La Lapa an even nicer surprise. We love this restaurant in the old part of the city, around the harbour and lagoon area. Make it a reason to linger over a meal.

El Castillejo
A high viewpoint with an extraordinary view down to Famara. Getting there is part of the adventure: a rough, potholed road and a final stretch on foot, followed by that enormous sweep of coast below you.

Castillo de Santa Bárbara
The fortress is currently closed, but its position is the real revelation: from the crater rim you can see across both sides of the island and understand why a fortress was built here.

La Graciosa · Playa de Las Conchas
Some of the most beautiful sand and sea colours we know, on a day trip to La Graciosa. The journey takes you through a wild, empty landscape, far from towns and cafés. At Las Conchas, the powerful Atlantic waves are part of the spectacle — we come for the beach and the views rather than a swim.

Haría
An old northern town surrounded by palms, especially green in spring. We like its small Saturday market and the slower rhythm of the streets. A lovely stop on a day exploring the north.

Jameos del Agua
If you see only one place on Lanzarote, this would be our choice. A huge lava tunnel and underground lagoon lead to a striking pool and a concert hall in the rock. Look for Jameos Nights in the current programme: dinner and music here make an extraordinary evening. Book ahead.

Kamezí Restaurant
When we head south, Kamezí is one of our reasons to go. The restaurant is lovely, and we especially like the tucked-away seats around the water for sunset and a glass of wine. Reserve the experience you want directly.

El Lago Verde · Charco de los Clicos
An astonishing green lagoon right beside the ocean. The contrast of colours is the whole reason to stop. Enjoy it from the designated viewpoint — this is a place to look, not to swim.

Mirador del Río
A wonderful view across to La Graciosa. We also enjoy the scenery from the LZ-202 along the cliffs when we want a quieter alternative.

Mirador de Haría
A beautifully designed, relatively new viewpoint above Haría and the Valley of a Thousand Palms. Its glass walkway reaches out over the valley, making the view feel even more extraordinary.

Cueva de Órzola
A sea cave hidden beyond the long beach at Órzola. Check the local tide times in a tide app before you go and plan your return before the tide rises: the sea can cut off the way back. Waves and swell matter too, so low tide alone does not guarantee access.

Playa del Janubio
Another favourite sunset spot: black shore, wild waves and the salt pans nearby. We come to watch the Atlantic put on a show, rather than for a swim.

A beautiful place to see the island’s salt-making landscape. Bring a little salt home: we like the black lava salt, and chocolate with salt is another favourite.

Stratified City · Rofera de Teseguite
An easy place to drive past without noticing. Stop and you find a small labyrinth of weathered volcanic shapes — the kind of place where a quick look turns into a much longer wander.

Montaña Tamia
“Our” volcano, where we walk regularly when we want a quiet outing. From here, you can see the pale sands of El Jable reaching the edge of Tiagua, with more volcanic craters scattered across the landscape. Best of all, there is hardly anyone around. Hiking shoes are a good choice for this trek. At the top, look out for the little tree we check on every time.

Teguise Market
On Sundays, from 9 am to 2 pm, the town becomes a busy market. Alongside football shirts and suspiciously “authentic” designer bags, there are wonderful local makers. Look for jewellery by Neus and Fardatxeta. This is also where we buy the African masks you will see in our villa.

Come on a day other than Sunday, when Teguise is quieter. Order wine and tapas — lots of tapas — and settle in.

El Patio Crêperie
A small courtyard crêperie in the old town of Teguise — a lovely place to pause over a crêpe while wandering through its lanes.

When we want to disappear into the lava fields, we come here: a small coastal village and the sound of wild Atlantic waves against the rock.

Tiagua
This is home. A little church, a beautiful old windmill and an extraordinary sense of calm. Slow down and enjoy the village as we do.

El Jable at Tiagua
Just a short walk along the tracks beyond the village, the landscape becomes a different world of pale sand and tiny shells. We love looking closely at the shapes and traces in the ground.

Timanfaya · Mancha Blanca Visitor Centre
The visitor centre is our favourite way to experience Timanfaya without watching it through a tour-bus window. Walk above the lava on the boardwalk and notice how the white building fits into the black landscape. Go to the rear terrace and look carefully — that meeting of architecture and lava is easy to miss. Admission to the visitor centre is free.

An imposing former quarry with remarkable cut rock walls. It is officially closed to the public, but remains part of the island’s story.
